Officially called the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, the more commonly known Knights of Malta is a Catholic lay religious order that originated in the 11th century. In addition to providing disaster relief and aid for refugees worldwide, the organization cares for society’s most vulnerable members through several aid and integration projects.
Specifically, the organization’s local chapters in Spain, Hungary, Great Britain, and Bulgaria operate soup kitchens and meals on wheels-style programs to ensure that housebound and homeless individuals receive nourishing food. In Lithuania, a program connects young people with elderly individuals in need of company, while the American Associations of the Order tends to the spiritual needs of people in prison.
